Timeless & Chic Halloween Decor
I’ve always loved Halloween. Although I’m the biggest scaredy cat and am not into anything too spooky. I prefer Halloween classics—give me all the pumpkins, spiders, bats and skeletons. Those feel thematic, timeless and fun without being gory, gross or cheesy. I love dressing up and have been making my own (and sometimes other people’s) costumes for over two decades. We have a costume closet, so to speak, and are able to cobble together costumes pretty quickly on the fly as well because of all the pieces we’ve made or collected over the years. My only complaint and maybe it isn’t even a complaint, but more so a question is, how do you decorate for fall and for Halloween? Typically when September hits, our house gets a fall makeover. The mantle becomes autumnal, wreaths get swapped along with pillows and blankets in the living room. And then October 1st comes and I want to decorate for Halloween, but not give up all the fall decor. Not to mention, when Halloween is over, do I switch back to fall decor again for November and Thanksgiving? Is this a flip flop flip situation? In my opinion it’s too quick to hop over to Christmas decor right after Halloween, but I also don’t want Halloween decor lingering into November. What do you do? This year I decided to swap a few things out for Halloween, but still leave enough fall things so that when I remove the Halloween pieces it doesn’t feel like I have to completely redecorate again. Many of the things I’ve used have been collected over time, but I’ve linked to what I can and similar items or things I’d buy today if I had more storage and could keep building out our collection. Some of my favorite places to shop for Halloween decorations are HomeGoods, Michael’s Crafts and thrift stores!
Pumpkins are a must and these velvet ones are gorgeous. I’ve had them for years, but they’re still being sold on Etsy. You can customize the colors and sizes you want to match your decor. They’re much nicer than other ones I’ve seen around which often have cheaper looking stems. I added in a little sheer black draped fabric, some black birds in varying sizes and a glass cloche with a foam skull. Voila! Instant chic Halloween added into our fall mantle.
I had to add a little bit of Halloween spookiness to Levi’s room as well. I’ve been collecting felt garlands to put on his bookshelf for all the holidays and Halloween was no exception. I set up his books on display on top and added some paper bats! Outside we planted some mums, picked up pumpkins from our favorite pumpkin patch, hung witches hats and put out a skeleton. Not pictured is our entryway which has hanging Harry Potter style candles that you can turn on with a magic wand—Levi is having so much fun!
