The Perfect Sugar Cookie

Let me start by saying that I’m usually not a big sugar cookie fan. They’re either too sweet, too crispy or both. I’m more of a doughy type of cookie person. BUT I love a cookie cutter and the idea of decorating cookies, so I’ve been on the hunt for a cookie recipe that I could use cookie cutters with. I first had these cookies at a 99th birthday party and I had to ask about them. They held their shape, had the perfect amount of sweetness and softness (without being chewy). It turns out it was an old recipe and I asked if they would share it! They remind me a little of a shortbread cookie which is probably why I like them so much! To me, they are perfect as is, but they would also be a great base for adding royal icing or sprinkles on top for decorating!

Ingredients

  • 3 cups flour

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 cup butter

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 2 eggs

  • 2 teaspoons vanilla

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°.

  2. Sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Set aside.

  3. In a large mixing bowl, beat together butter and sugar.

  4. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the mixing bowl with the butter and sugar.

  5. Add in eggs and vanilla, beat until all combined.

  6. Chill dough in refrigerator until firm (about 30 minutes).

  7. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to 1/4 inch thick. Cut into desired shapes and place on baking sheet.

  8. Bake for 7 minutes, rotating half way through.
