Nursery Decor Updates
I first wrote about Levi's nursery a few months ago and I still couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. Since then, I’ve added a few “finishing” touches. Finishing in quotes because I’m sure I’ll always be somewhat tinkering and adjusting as he grows and his needs and interests change. One thing I added was a storage ottoman. This chair desperately calls for a footrest (or maybe it’s me that desperately calls for one). When we brought Levi home from the hospital and it became clear I was going to be spending hours in this chair breastfeeding (read about my journey here) Brendan brought in another chair so he could keep me company and when he wasn’t in there with me, I used it to prop up my feet. It did the trick, but took up a lot of room in an already small space and obviously did nothing for the design of the room. Once I decided that I definitely wanted to be able to put my feet up all the time, the search for an ottoman began. I figured since the room is small a storage ottoman would come in handy. I came across this skirted option and loved how many different fun fabric options you could choose from. I went with the citrine cabana stripe to add some bold color and whimsy to the room. It is a pretty big ottoman, but I decided I’d rather go big than too small.
This room has a funny area right behind where the door opens, it’s created by the closet being built out into the room, but only taking up part of the length of that wall. It looked so blank, but I wasn’t sure what I could really put there since it is so small and right by the door. I decided I wanted a little shelf to display cute books and art and most importantly to be able to showcase some sweet little outfits. I couldn’t find exactly what I wanted online in the size I needed since I didn’t want it to interfere with opening the door. I saw a couple of people who took these nursery shelves, or sometimes spice racks, and flipped them upside down to use the bar on the bottom for hanging clothes. I thought that might work, but then I didn’t love the idea that the top would essentially be a flat floating shelf with nothing there to secure anything I wanted to put on it. I decided I would try to DIY my own shelf and hanging rod. I bought this shelf and a long cabinet door pull and drilled holes to attach it to the underside of the shelf. It worked perfectly and turned out just how I wanted! If you’re looking to try to make something similar, instead of using a long cabinet door pull, you could use a wall mounted towel bar as well. I tried this and it felt a little bit too chunky and large for the size shelf I got so ultimately went with the door pull because the proportions were better, but a towel bar is definitely another option depending on your shelf size.
It fills this awkward space perfectly, providing just enough interest without causing any blockage into the room. I’ve been having fun displaying different outfits and special pieces of clothing.
